24 Hour Modding Contest

I'm interested in hosting a very rapid modding contest - a total of 24 hours from start to finish.

It's my hope that this strict limit would, you know, end up with some actual mods rather than ambitious half-finished projects. Is anyone interested in participating?

Sounds interesting. I propose we do this on the weekend. I also think we should give bonus points to those who finish within 12h, and detract points from those who finish within 24h to 36h. We should disqualify those mods that take longer than 36h.

You can count me in, as long as I'm not busy whenever this starts.

I feel the need to share.

If I go through with is until the end and all works, I might be able to alleviate some of my depression and pessimism. I'll probably just fail though.

Not exactly sure when this is going to take place - I need a time when I'm not too busy to officiate.

I might join in. I haven't modded in quite awhile.

Count me in. I need the practice. However, can I do mine in another 24 hour period, as in starting early? I'll still only take 24 hours, but since we only have one modding computer, I want no to interfere with my bro's mod. Also, can we have partners?

EDIT: I also suggest balancing not be included in the 24 hour period. I have no clue how to do it, so I'll need to get a balancer to do it, and, all in all, it should be separate, in my opinion.

Oh yes, totally in. Just poke me over MSN on the date and all that crap, k?

If I can waste 24 hours I'll do it. But I'm in finals so it'll kinda screw me over if you do it in a weird date.

The contest will be from noon EST on Saturday to noon EST on Sunday. Entries can be PMed to me here or at SEN.

If someone wants to make a topic on SEN about this, that would be nice.

Are we supposed to post our mod idea in this thread?

Cool deal jelly beans!
I'm happy to see this interest in modding, tho the notion that one can build a "complete" mod in 24 hours seems a bit stretched.

In 24 hours one should focus on something very small; something that you can perfect in 24 hours that will have meaning or have potential to expand , or even be used in a future project, rather than just random junk. So here's some suggestions:

  • Build a new unit (not an army of units, but 1 possibly 2 PERFECT units) complete with documentation: iscript, wirefram, new cmdicon, attack animations, shadows, etc. Ago_Trooper from Warboards was really good at making these kind of sample exes. The guy at Maplantis who built the banshee was a good recent example that comes to mind as well.
  • Write a plugin with documentation explaining how it works such as the excellent examples BroodKiller uploaded.
  • Update an older mod to Fgraft.
  • Find more 1.16.1 FG offsets.
  • Write a GOOD tutorial
  • Spend 24 hours improving a mod of your own that you haven't touched in a long time. No mod is ever perfect. Maybe you'll discover that some of your old projects were really neat and will respark your interest to continue working on them again.
Anyways, these are some suggestions for you veterans and creame of the crop modders. Stay focused and concentrate on quality and something that will have meaning vs. trying to do too much.

#######################################################

With all that bullcrap said, here’s my entry to this contest. I spent one whole Saturday evening not too long ago building this unit and not a single minute more. I would do something new for the scheduled time frame, as almost everyday this past month has been a 24 hour modding contest it seems, but I am playing in a huge 3 day tournament over the weekend in which I represent my golf course, so sorry, it doesn't work for me.

download:
Tesla Sentry.zip

This unit is your standard kitbash; you know copy/paste, crop, recolor, smudge, re-index, blah blah blah. For those to lazy to download, I actually made a crude demonstration video that Saturday evening as well:

K, gluck and don't slack off! If you've committed, then have some pride and actually DO Something! I expect to see some really good entries when I check back Monday morning.

Can I work together with my bro? And is it okay if I'm a little late, or will I be disqualified?

I'm not working with you. Any partnership between us would consist of me making your mod for you (instead of making what I want to make), then you taking all the credit.

Can I make the mod and pass it off to a balancer without this being included in the 24 hours?

EDIT: I may drop out from sheer laziness.
